Arkansas hail damage insurance claims
Arkansas takes hail seriously and a lot of metal roofs here start with a storm. This is what usually happens next, what your policy normally covers, and the two offers that should end a conversation with a contractor. Stated as of August 2026. This is general information rather than insurance or legal advice, and your own policy governs.
A sensible order of operations
- Document what you can see safely. Photographs from the ground, dated, before anything changes. Do not climb onto a storm-damaged roof to get them.
- Report the claim yourself. Directly to your insurer, not through a contractor.
- Get an estimate from someone you chose. A contractor you contacted is a different starting position from one who contacted you.
- Check the registration and insurance before signing anything. Including any document a crew hands over on the doorstep.
- Settle the upgrade question early. If you are going from asphalt to metal, know what part of that is yours.
What a policy usually pays for
Homeowners policies are generally written around restoring the roof covering that was there. That means the asphalt roof you had, not the standing seam roof you would like. The upgrade to metal is normally your money, and it is better to know that in week one than after the adjuster's number arrives.
Depreciation, replacement cost provisions and your deductible all shape what actually lands in your account and when. Those are policy-specific, so the useful move is to ask your own agent to walk you through your own policy rather than to rely on any general description, including this one.
The cosmetic damage question, which is a metal-roof question
Hail can dent a metal panel without affecting how it sheds water. Whether that dent is covered damage depends on your policy, and some policies carry a cosmetic damage exclusion aimed exactly at this. If you already have a metal roof, or you are about to buy one, read that part of your policy and ask your agent what your carrier does with dents. It is one of the few roofing questions where the answer is written down and specific to you.
Two offers that should end the conversation
An offer to waive, absorb or rebate your deductible. The Arkansas Insurance Department warns homeowners about it. You do not need to resolve the legal analysis to know what the offer says about the business making it.
An offer to handle or negotiate the claim for you. Deal with your insurer directly. A contractor's job is to describe the damage and price the repair, and your insurer's job is to apply your policy.
The contractor check does not pause for a storm
If anything it matters more, because storms bring crews into the state who were not here last month. Arkansas requires the roofing contractor registration to perform residential roofing work, and the builder exemption specifically does not cover a business using door-to-door sales of roofing services. The full version is in storm chasers and door-to-door roofing sales.
Upgrading to metal on a claim
If you are taking the storm as the moment to move from asphalt to metal, two practical notes. Decide the system and gauge before the adjuster's scope is finalised, because the difference is yours to fund and it changes what you are agreeing to. And ask your agent whether your carrier gives anything for an impact-resistant covering, because if it does, the specific product matters and it is worth choosing with that in hand. Start with The Arkansas Metal Roofing Guide and hail damage roof replacement.
Before you sign
Four things you can check in Arkansas
Arkansas registers roofing contractors and does not examine them, so the state confirms who is bonded, insured and answerable to the committee. Everything about skill is still yours to check.
-
The roofing contractor registration
Arkansas requires a roofing contractor registration certificate to perform residential roofing work. Ask for the registration and check it against the Contractors Licensing Board's own record. Working without one is a Class A misdemeanor under 17-25-603, with each day counted as a separate offense.
-
The $15,000 surety bond
Every registrant files a $15,000 surety bond with the application, along with proof of workers compensation coverage where the business has employees (17-25-604). The bond is not an insurance policy for your project, and it is worth knowing it exists and who wrote it.
-
A current insurance certificate, sent by the agent
Ask for general liability and workers compensation certificates to be sent to you directly by the insurance agency, naming you, rather than handed over as a PDF. Arkansas does not test roofers, so this is one of the checks that carries real weight.
-
A written contract with a change-order process
Get the scope, the metal system and gauge, the underlayment, the fastening method and the price in writing, with a stated process for anything found once the old roof is off. Decking damage is the usual surprise on a tear-off.
Registration rules from Ark. Code Ann. 17-25-601 to 17-25-611, published by the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board. Status as of August 2026.
